The European Gymnastics Federation has released the lists of the gymnasts (MAG, WAG) who got nominative spots for the European Games.
At the 2018 European Championships, six countries in MAG and WAG competitions were able to win two non-nominative spots through the team qualification. However, most spots were up for grabs at the latest European Championships and they were all nominative, meaning that a gymnast qualifies the spot for herself only and cannot be replaced by another gymnast from the same country.
18 spots were available in the all-around competition and went to the gymnasts from countries that did not qualify any non-nominative spots, and three spots were available in each of the even finals. Since some countries qualified multiple spots, they could choose which nominative spots to accept and then the unused spots were reallocated. The lists of qualifiers were published after the countries confirmed their acceptance of the spots.
While Enrico Casella, the head coach of Italian WAG, said that Italy would skip the Games altogether, it seems that they want to leave an option to send one gymnast. Italy accepted Alice D’Amato’s spot from the all-around but declined the spots for Asia D’Amato and Giorgia Villa that they earned in the event finals.
Russia has two non-nominative spots for both MAG and WAG, so they only needed to accept one nominative spot, indicating who one of their three gymnasts will be. They will need to submit the rest of the names by the end of May. Vladislav Poliashov got the nominative spot for MAG and Angelina Melnikova – for WAG. Earlier, the coaches said that for MAG, the likely candidates for non-nominative spots would be David Belyavskiy and Dmitri Lankin, while for WAG – Aliya Mustafina and one of the new seniors.
Out of the countries that didn’t have any non-nominative spots, Ukraine managed to qualify three gymnasts in both MAG and WAG. Armenia, Italy, and Israel were able to get three spots each for MAG.
