Melnikova: We haven’t expected such a crowd

Angelina Melnikova came to the European Games as one of the leaders in all-around and on several events and finished first in qualification with almost half a point over the second place finisher, Georgia-Mae Fenton. She finally got a score over 13 on beam after revamping her routine but her new floor didn’t go over so well and she wasn’t able to make the floor final.

She made finals on beam and vault and told the journalists that she was especially happy with how her beam went:

“I’m happy with beam, I managed to go over 13. Before, at all the major competitions I had 12.8 or 12.9, while today I got 13.133. I changed the routine and changed it significantly, and I’m happy that the judges took notice. On floor, however, I made a mistake on my third pass. In the final, I intend to do my routines better.”

“Worlds and Olympic Games are ahead of us, so here I’m more focused on doing my routines and not on my competitors. I need to work on my routines more. In terms of the atmosphere, it’s really cool here. It’s surprising that there are so many gymnastics fans in a Russian-speaking country because there are almost none in Russian and we actually haven’t even expected to see such a large crowd here.”
