Mustafina will likely miss Euros

As it was expected, Aliya Mustafina is not competing at this week’s Russian Cup due to her knee injury. Evgeny Grebyonkin, the women’s national team head coach, said to TASS that Mustafina will also likely miss Euros as the main goal is to have her recovered by Worlds:

“We are giving Aliya an opportunity to recover so that’s why she won’t compete at the Russian Cup in Chelyabinsk. Mustafina is preparing without rushing according to her schedule. Regarding her participation at Euros, originally we planned to prepare her for the World Championships in Qatar. So, we’re not counting on her in Glasgow”.

Interestingly, while Grebyonkin said that Mustafina wasn’t supposed to be ready by Euros according to the original plan, the gymnast herself kept saying that she wanted Euros to be her first major international competition after the comeback and still planned competing there only a month ago.
