Rodionenko: I’m not ruling out Alexeeva making the national team this year

WOGA’s Irina Alexeeva had a good competition in the qualifications at the Russian Championships today except for the fall on beam. She ended up in 7th place with 53.732 surpassing some of the girls currently on the national team and would’ve moved into 4th ahead of Viktoria Komova if she didn’t fall.

Valentina Rodionenko clearly noticed and said to TASS that Alexeeva might be included on the national team already this year:

“I think that the first competition of Alexeeva in Russia after a long break went well. She went on the competition floor without having an opportunity to adapt to the time difference normally. Ira competed in a new environment for her which isn’t easy either. Yes, she made mistakes but it’s all fixable. It’s hard to say now how it all will work out further but I’m not ruling out that she’ll be really contending for a place on the national team already this season. She has a strong routine on bars, she has a good floor. So, we’ll live and see. Especially since this season, we’ll be competing without Elena Eremina and Maria Paseka who are injured”.

Tomorrow, Alexeeva will compete in the all-around final (live stream). The final starts at 3pm local time (8am ET). The all-around winners will be decided by the results of two competition days so she still has a chance to move higher up.
