Rodionenko: The team was obligated to win at the Universiade

Valentina Rodionenko talked today to TASS about the gold medal of the Russian WAG team at the Universiade:

“They were obligated to win, even though we had some doubts because the last training before they left was not what we wanted it to be. The girls made mistakes but they understood that they can’t make mistakes at the competition. We told them that if they make a mistake on each apparatus, they won’t even make the first three teams. They analyzed everything, made conclusions and understood everything, they’re all adult and experienced, after all.”

“Everyone fought hard, everything’s ok, the girls are great. Elizarova surprised everyone when she got the best score on floor, she fought well, she was great. Perhaps, she’ll even win in the final, even though she’s the oldest on the team.”

  • What just happened for Masha’s first vault? Yes, a little lack of momentum, but the height for landing is OK, she nailed and then hand touch met, i was there, i think it was the mat problem! Her right foot was stuck down the mat! Masha wore a waist protection in warming up, just few months training after Rio, maybe Masha isn’t that ready, but i think she just gave it all, why just Valentina couldn’t say things positive to encourage the girls?!

  • I was surprised that Elizarova made huge mistakes on floor, really feel sad and sorry for her!
