Last week Sergei Starkin, Aliya Mustafina’s personal coach, announced that she had a meniscus injury which forced her to withdraw from the Osijek World Cup. While Starkin said that the injury is very minor and Mustafina should be able to return to full training by the end of the month, Valentina Rodionenko said to RIA Novosti today that Mustafina might be sent to Germany for a checkup (as many Russian gymnasts go to Germany with medical issues):
“Aliya is trying to fully recover but it’s hard for her, she needs to get back to her normal weight. That’s why there’s a large load put on the knee she had a surgery on and it starts hurting. We will probably send her to Germany for a checkup. We’ll see what is going on during the first week of the training camp and then decide on the dates. She wants to compete at the Russian Camp”.
The next training camp starts on Sunday. This week, after withdrawing from the World Cup, Mustafina is training in Penza, according to Pravda-News.
The Russian Cup will take place at the end of June and will serve as a team selection for the European Championships.
