The reigning European champion Ellie Downie has announced on Twitter that her recovery will take more time than expected as she needs another ankle surgery. Downie missed the World Championships recovering from a surgery on her ankle and planned to return to competition early this season but the recovery has been going slow. She wrote on Twitter that her ankle still can’t endure the amount of training she wants to do in order to get back at the highest level. The gymnast did not specify when she plans to return to competition. Since there’s no AA competition at Euros this year, she’ll still have a chance to defend her title in 2019.
