While the fans keep guessing whether Viktoria Komova has retired and have their hopes up every time she posts something remotely connected to gymnastics on social media, like doing a turn on beam, the gymnast herself keeps silent and refuses to answer whether she will be back.
We still do not know the full details of the story of why Komova who seemed to have to comeback going quite well abruptly stopped training in August and left the national team. Part of it is surely the fact that she didn’t make the Euros team despite performing well at the Russian Cup and supposedly fulfilling the requirements set before her by the national team staff. However, it is not clear whether leaving Round Lake was her own decision as a reaction to perceived unfair treatment or she was kicked off the national team. Valentina Rodionenko and even Komova’s father, Aleksandr Komov, claimed that she started experiencing back pain again, while the gymnast denied it.
In the several interviews she gave since August, Komova continues presenting herself as an active gymnast, although she does not answer any questions about competitive plans. So, it seems, that she’s still leaving the door for a potential comeback open.
Komova said to TASS that she will not compete at the upcoming Russian Championships, but she plans to announce her decision regarding the retirement during that competition:
“I cannot compete at the Russian championships in Penza because I missed the regional competition which was a qualifier [for the nationals]. What am I going to do next? I will announce this during the Russian Championships”.
