“Lord of the Rings” four-time consecutive World Champion and 2016 Olympic Champion on Rings, Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece delivered a personal and heartfelt message to all his lifelong supporters around the world. On his Instagram, Petrounias reported that due to a nagging shoulder injury that has been a constant struggle since his showing at the Olympic Games in 2016, he has made the difficult decision to undergo surgery.
Petrounias will not be able to defend another World Title at World Championships this year. He has undergone surgery in the past and must undergo yet another one. The shoulder has been already bothering him during the European Championships, he said that he was paralyzed by the pain before the qualifications. With the help of his medical team, family and Greek fans, he believes he will be able to earn several more European and World titles. His final statement on his personal message is this: “We will soon be strong, strong, to put the Greek flag again in highest honor”.
This is devastating news for the gymnastics community although it will open the door for a contending athlete to claim the title this year at World Championships 2018. However, look out for Petrounias in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The “Lord of the Rings” vows to come back stronger and healthier than ever, for all the wonderful people of Greece and for his fans around the world.
