Milad Karimi returned to competition at the Kazakhstan Championships

This weekend Almaty, Kazakhstan hosted the national championships. A second-year senior Ilyas Azizov won the all-around on the men’s side (71.15) while Yerbol Jantykov (74.20) and Dmitriy Patanin (72.60) won silver and bronze, respectively.

The competition marked the return of Milad Karimi who suffered a scary arm injury at the Melbourn World Cup earlier this year. He’s recovering well but is only doing floor at the moment – his strongest event. At the first competition after the injury, he won silver on floor with 13.266 (Ilyas Azizov won gold with 13.366). According to Timur Abdullin, the president of the technical committee of Kazakhstan’s Gymnastics Federation, Karimi will be trying to get a place on the team for the Asian Games in August. He will soon travel with the team to a training camp in South Korea to prepare for the Games. For now, he is only expected to compete on floor.

Akim Mussayev who won silver on pommel horse at Osijek Challenge Cup had a bad day and got only 7.9 on PH in qualification. He is also currently preparing for the Asian Games.

Nariman Kurbanov who won gold on PH at Melbourn World Cup and silver at Koper Challenge Cup posted 14.10 in the pommel horse final and won gold. It’s a bit lower than his scores from the international competitions this year but he still had the highest score of the competition on any apparatus.

Since juniors and seniors competed together, on the women’s side the all-around silver and bronze medals were won by juniors. New senior Airalym Meiram won the all-around with 50.30. Korkem Yerbossynkyzy won silver with 50.20 and Alexandra Shametko won bronze with 48.70. Both juniors were born in 2004 and will become seniors only in 2020.
