Morgan Hurd is slated to compete at Tokyo World Cup

USA Gymnastics has announced the assignments for the World Cups. FIG has released the lineups for three of the cups before, so it was already known that the Leanne Wong and Grace McCallum would compete at the American Cup, with Simone Biles going to Stuttgart and Riley McCusker – to Birmingham. In addition, Morgan Hurd got the assignment to compete at the Tokyo World Cup that will take place in March.

Jade Carey’s absence on the roster of the apparatus World Cup that will take place in Melbourne this month raised some questions as she is trying to qualify to the Olympics as an individual via the apparatus World Cups. Turns out, USAG probably decided to save some money and send her to two back-to-back World Cups on the same continent – in Baku and Doha. Earlier, USAG’s rules for World Cup qualification revealed that by default they would only pay for a gymnast to participate in three apparatus World Cups.

USAG also plans to send teams to Jesolo and Gymnix. The US team used to attend those competitions religiously, but last year, in the aftermath of closing the ranch and having no permanent training center for camps, they decided to skip. Instead, individual US gymnasts self-funded their travel and represented their clubs at those competitions. However, this year it’s back to the routine and we’ll see a US team in Jesolo again. The teams will be selected during the national team camp later this month. We are likely to see the new seniors tested out at these competitions as so far only one new senior got an assignment – Leanne Wong.
