Nikita Nagorny, the reigning World and European all-around champion is currently leading the all-around standings with 87.897 pver Xiao Ruoteng (87.732), Sun Wei (87.298) and his teammate Artur Dalaloyan (85.957). This score is very likely to hold up until the end of the days, since Nagorny’s main rivals in the all-around are Xiao and Sun. The producers of the Olympic broadcast (the broadcast that was used in many countries around the world) clearly did not do their homework and were not aware that viewers would like to see Nagorny’s routines, so we did not see him compete even once. Hopefully, as one of the qualification leaders, he will be shown more during the all-around final on Wednesday.
Nagorny said he hasn’t been able to achieve everything he planned today:
“I did about 60% of what I wanted. This is qualification, I didn’t set over-the-top goals for myself. I wanted to make the finals on the most possible number of events. I’m upset that I wasn’t able to do bars well, I made a major error. I didn’t quite get the judging on rings. I don’t have complaints regarding the judges, I respect their decision but I normally get higher execution scores on rings. Regarding other events, I don’t have questions [about judging]. But I can’t say that I’m absolutely happy. And that’s good – if there are mistakes, it means there’s something to work on and there’s room for improvement. And the most important competitions are next – the finals.”
“After the first event [rings], I started ruminating on it, I couldn’t feel what exactly I did wrong. I went out to vault, made an error, got 14.8 and started ruminating again. Then I started thinking – enough, do everything fine, like you can. I can definitely say that the floor routine was a relief for me.”
