Nikita Nagorny qualified to the floor final in second place after Artem Dolgopyat. He didn’t do his full difficulty in the qualification and the big question was whether he’d add his triple pike to the routine which he debuted at the European Championships. Nagorny indeed added the triple pike to the routine but flew out of bounds on it and had multiple mistakes throughout the routine. As a result, he finished 7th and his score in the final was two points lower than the qualification.
Nagorny told journalists after the final:
“Many factors affected it, my day didn’t go well. I was trying to get into the mindset to go out and do it but self-programming isn’t always doing well. I don’t like competing first. All the competitions where I competed first didn’t go so well. But it’s not an excuse, it’s my fault. I had a long pass in the end of the routine and didn’t manage to connect it, then I did another pass, lost ten second, and started thinking what else I forgot to do. This was one of my worst routines.”
Nagorny will compete in two more event finals – on vault and horizontal bar. He is the reigning World champion on vault and hopes the competition will go better tomorrow:
“The emotions are interesting, confusing somewhat. I didn’t take risks here, I went out and did the routine which I was preparing, my named pass was in it from the start. You can draw all sorts of conclusions but there’s nothing to do now, perhaps, it can be applied in the future. It’s sad. I failed today. I need to get myself together and do well in the other two days. It’s not ok to compete like I did. I need to represent my country well. We’ll see how it goes. I’ll work on recovery. I’m the reigning World champion on vault. Let’s see whether I’ll prove that or will have to say I’m ashamed again.”
