Nikita Nagornyy was one of the favorites for a medal on floor at Euros but a mistake on the landing pushed him out of the top three. The team final at Euros was also the first time he competed on vault in a few months since he is expected to compete in the all-around at Worlds. The gymnast told the media that he will focus on improving the execution on floor and will try to decide if he wants to add a second vault again and contend for the vault final.
“If we’re talking about yesterday [the team final] and drawing conclusions from it, I’ll be paying special attention now to floor and vault. I haven’t been doing vault for about half a year and what I showed yesterday in the team final was spontaneous. There’s a lot of work to do on vault and I need to think about the second vault, whether I’ll do it at the World Championships. I need to think about the all-around, that is, to get my foor routine to a higher level than the one I showed at the European Championships. To go out and do everything, at least on the floor, and not to make a mistake on the very first pass. I thought that I needed a bit more power in order to do the element but it turned out that I put a bit too much [power], I didn’t estimate my state correctly. It’s all fine, this competition went like it was supposed to”.
Nagornyy also said that the fourth place on rings was a very good result for him but he did expect a better placement on floor coming into the final:
“The rings – I’m not a rings specialists, I got the maximum score for me. I’ve never gotten a higher score and the fourth place is a great result for me, but I’m upset about the floor. The mistakes that were made could have been avoided”.
