Olivia Cimpian returned to Romania

Last year Olivia Cimpian, one of the rising seniors of the Romanian team who competed at home European Championships in Cluj, left Romania for Hungary. Her grandmother was a Hungarian national and she was able to receive citizenship in September of 2017. In October, the FIG approved a nationality change for her with a waiting period of one year. That would allow Cimpian to compete at this year’s Worlds.

Cimpian’s father said that he thought training in Hungary would be better for his daughter and would allow her more opportunities: What we want is for our daughter to grow as much as she can in the sport that she loves. In Hungary, there is a different approach to training that we think will benefit her, and we think she could help their team”.

However, this month Cimpian abruptly returned to Romania and is reportedly training in Deva now and trying to get back on the Romanian team. Her father commented on the decision, saying that Cimpian’s education suffered after her move to Hungary and that was the main reason for their return.

Andreea Raducan said to the press that the Romanian federation is willing to take Cimpian back provided that Hungary releases her. It is not clear how much time the formalities would take.

  • In addition to the above article – according people familiar with the matter – Olivia Cimpian had a sever set back in her gymnastics development in Hungary.

She did not receive the expert coaching during her stay in Hungary. Unfortunately her lack of progress was due to the quality of coaching.

Hopefully she will receive the appropriate attention and will be able to fulfil her potential under expert coaching in Deva.

    PS. Piibunina, you’re absolutely correct.
