Vladislav Poliashov has been on the national team for quite a while and won many medals at the national championships but often fell short of making big international teams. He was an alternate at the 2016 Rio Olympics and then an alternate at the 2018 World Championships. After placing second in the all-around at the Russian Championships and then went on to win gold and silver on parallel bars at World Cups. Next week, Poliashov will compete at his first senior Euros.
After the Russian Championships, he talked to Gymnastika, the federation’s magazine, about his plans for this year:
“Compared to what I showed at the last year’s Russian Championships in Kazan and the Russian Cup in Yekaterinburg, I think, I’m progressing. I upgraded the pommel horse routine, I did a new routine on floor, after working on past mistakes, I upgraded my bars routine. There’s kind of a “slippery” element there on one bar, but, in general, I managed it.”
“Honestly, the fact that I was on the team at the last World Championships in Doha really inspired me. Even though I didn’t compete there, I, as they say, breathed the special air, dove into the new atmosphere, this is precious. I was starting the preparation for the new season in a new mood. So it would be a waste to compete badly, I needed to keep up.”
“Can I compete with the leaders – Nikita Nagornyy and Artur Dalaloyan? I can, if I’ll work on my difficulty. I’m losing them in that. I have weak rings and high bar. I need to upgrade those, first of all, and then I’ll be able to fight as an equal at the Russian Cup. This season, I’d like to make the European Championships team and show good results on bars and pommel horse. I’d also like to get on the Universiade’s team. I understand that it’s not an easy task since the last time, there were five people on the team, while now, it’s three. Well, that’s for the coaches to decide. And I’m also setting the goal for myself to do well at the Russian Cup in order to make the World Championships team. If it happens, I hope that I’ll be a full member of the team, not an alternate.”
