This week Elena Eremina announced that she had a back surgery and will have to miss training for 6 months.
Valentina Rodionenko said to TASS that the surgery was mostly preventative as the Russian team wants Eremina in full health for the Olympics. They do not plan to rush Eremina’s recovery as they can probably do well at this year’s Worlds without her and so the gymnast will likely miss the whole season:
“She can start training in half a year. I think that Elena won’t be able to recover in time for the World Championships that will take place in October in Qatar. If we can manage without her this season, then that’s what we will do. It’s important for us to save this athlete [for later]”.
“The doctors were supposed to uncover this issue [with her back] a long time ago. If she had a full serious check up right after she started gymnastics, it would be possible to cure this problem back then. But now when she has serious training loads, the spinal cartilage started to suffer. It’s not too serious yet in her case, but we decided to do the surgery so that the problem wouldn’t be aggravated later”.
According to Rodionenko, the doctors are satisfied with the results of the surgery and suggest that in three months, Eremina will be able to start light conditioning.
