Russia is bidding to host Universiade and European Games in 2023

Russian government approved the country’s bids for several sporting events. Among those are Kazan’s bid to host the 3rd European Games and Yekaterinburg’s bid to host the Summer Universiade – both events are to take place in the summer of 2023.

Kazan has already hosted multiple international events in the past, most notably the summer Universiade in 2013. Yekaterinburg was one of the hosts of last summer’s World Cup in football. Kazan already has the existing infrastructure and won’t need to invest much in building or updating the facilities. Yekaterinburg doesn’t really have the infrastructure right now but the Universiade would coincide with the city’s big anniversary (300 years since the foundation) which will likely attract sponsors.

Both Universiade and European Games feature artistic gymnastics as one of the sports. The last time Russia hosted a large gymnastics competition was in 2013 when it held the European Championships and the Universiade.
