While Sanne Wevers came to Glasgow as the reigning Olympic champion and a silver Worlds medalist on beam, she has never won any medals on that event at the European Championships before. We talked to Sanne Wevers after she won gold in the beam final at Euros.
Q: Do you feel any pressure as the reigning Olympic champion that now you have to win?
A: Yeah, it’s a little bit different, but I’m getting used to it now.
Q: Your notebook is quite famous now. Do you know that during the Olympics a commentator called it your diary?
A: I do! But it’s not my diary. [laughs]
Q: Not many people calculate their scores right after the routine. How did you decide to start doing it?
A: Maybe because my routine is a little bit different from the most and I have a lot of connection values so sometimes it’s just hard to judge my routine. So, just to be sure, I calculate it.
Q: Have you thought of becoming a judge because you’re so good at judging beam?
A: A lot of people told me that. But I’m not sure. I just focus on this career now and I don’t know what’s going to happen later.
Q: And how is your sister Lieke doing?
A: She’s taking some time off right now, she’s not in the gym to do gymnastics but only to stay healthy and fit. But she will be back, I hope, it’s just taking a lot of time.
Q: Your team won bronze here, without Eythora Thorsdottir who got injured, so as a team you can do even better in the future. How did it feel to win a medal?
A: The team was amazing, this felt really good. Just to be here as a team and to get a medal the first time in, I guess, 16 years, it was really special.
