A group of residents of Shymkent, a city in South Kazakhstan, are collecting signatures in order to ask the city council to name one of the streets after Nellie Kim.
Kim’s family moved to Shymkent shortly after her birth. She started doing gymnastics in the city school and lived there until 1977 when she got married and moved to Belarus. The gymnastics school was later named after the famous pupil but then lost the name due to administrative reasons. The Shymkent’s residents are now trying to preserve Nellie Kim’s legacy in another way. There was no official response from the city council yet.
