Simakova: My mindset was to get gold

Angelina Simakova won the all-around at the Russian Championships despite having trouble on floor on the first day and falling on vault on the second day. Simakova told TASS that the results were not surprising as she expected to win:

“The most difficult thing was to manage the nerves. But my mindset was to get gold.”

Valentina Rodionenko also noted that Simakova was at the moment the most prepared gymnast on the national team, so she was expected to win:

“There were no surprises in this victory. They [the gymnasts] are at camps all the time and Angelina was the most prepared. We were surprised that she made a mistake [on vault] today. She was nervous, even though she’s been to the World Championships and, it seems, she shouldn’t [make mistakes.”

It seems that Rodionenko forgot that at Worlds, Simakova fell on vault in the qualification and got a zero and then did not vault in the team final, so going to Wolrds might not have necessarily provided her with the required consistency.

Simakova is currently scheduled to compete at the DTB Pokal challenge next week in Stuttgart and at the Tokyo World Cup.
