Eythora Thorsdottir was originally one of the medal favorites for the Montreal Worlds but two rib fractures meant that she could not compete all-around and could not train much leading up to the competition.
She talked to Rinjmond.nl a bit about her experience at Worlds and recovery. The translation from Dutch is done by Mariska.
“I suffered two stress fractures and I competed at Worlds in Montreal with those stress fractures. That didn’t help. That was horrible. Worlds was not a fun competition for me. But I did gain the experience that I’m strong enough to do this. Even though I haven’t been able to show everything I’m capable of or perform optimally”.
Thorsdottir doesn’t plan to retire anytime soon:
“I’m still quite young and I don’t think I’ve been noticed yet. I hope there is more that I am capable of”.
When asked why she decided to compete for the Netherlands instead of Iceland, the home country of her father, she said there were a few reasons:
“I’m not the kind of person that chooses the easy way. The level of gymnastics in Iceland is lower than in the Netherlands. It’s my Dutch pride, too. I am training here”.
