Turkish gymnast Tutya Yilmaz has retired following the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart. The 20 year old shared a short video and caption on her Instagram, stating:
‘Today I am saying goodbye to my gymnastics career…I’ve spent 17 years of my life full of success and happy moments that I will be proud of. More importantly, as a national athlete, it was an honor for me to carry the moon-star coat and serve this country; I will carry this pride with honor throughout my life.’
Yilmaz thanked the Minister for Youth and Sports, Mehmet Bakyan, her family and her teachers, and said she was equally as proud of her medals won internationally as she was competing for the ITU (Istanbul Technological University) Sports Club. Education was always a top priority for her and her family, she said, and she was proud she could keep up her studies and compete at the same time.
Yilmaz represented Turkey at the 2014 Youth Olympics and the 2015 European Games in Baku. In 2016, she won gold at the Mersin World Challenge Cup in Turkey, and was first reserve for the Balance Beam Final in the Rio Olympic Games. She struggled with injuries this year and was unable to qualify to the Tokyo Olympics.
