Vanessa Ferrari was able to return to competition this year for the first time after her 2017 Achilles tear and competed at three World Cups, placing first in Melbourne and third in Baku and Doha. She is trying to win an individual spot for the Tokyo Olympics at World Cups, so she would miss the upcoming World Championships in any case.
After competing at World Cups, Ferrari announced that she would have another surgery to prevent a more serious injury. She underwent surgery on both ankles to remove bone pieces that were causing pain.
She said to the Italian Gymnastics Federation:
“I am truly reassured by Doctor Giacomo Zanon’s words [the surgeon who operated on her]. He explained to me how he operated on my ankles and most importantly he told me I will benefit from the surgery. Now, I have a difficult time ahead of me, that of yet another recovery, that I will have to follow to the letter in times and ways, just like Doctor Zanon told me to do. I know that the whole Italian gymnastics’ world is standing by me and I’m very pleased by that. I can only promise that I will do my best to come back at high levels and to try to get the pass for my fourth Olympics. Besides my supporters, I would like to thank the Federation and the Army because I know that I can always count on them.”
