WAG Russian Championships – schedule and links

Junior and Senior Women’s Russian Championships are starting today in Penza. Most of the top gymnasts are missing it due to the fears of catching COVID-19 but the federation decided to still proceed with the competition. Some of the gymnasts that are participating are technically on the national team but haven’t been invited to camps for a while, so they might feel like this competition is their chance to get a ticket to Round Lake. Among those are Elena Eremina, Uliana Perebinosova, Anastasia Iliankova, Viktoria Trykina, and Varvara Zubova. We will also see former national team members Tatiana Nabieva and Daria Skrypnik. Maria Kharenkova who now represents Georgia will compete here for her Russian region as she retained Russian citizenship. It will be the senior debut for Irina Komnova who was on the gold-winning team at the European Youth Olympic Festival last year.

Junior national team members present at the competition are Alyona Glotova and Sofia Koroleva born in 2005 and Nina Puzatikova, Anastasia Rasseykina, Daria Ozhigova and Ursula Shakirova all born in 2006. Liubov Akhaimova is also competing – the younger sister of Lilia Akhaimova. She is not quite at the level to be on the national team radar but, perhaps, she will be a late bloomer like Lilia who only made the national team at 18.
