Khorkina believes postponing the Olympics is a punishment from God for offending Russia

The Tokyo Olympics were officially postponed until 2021 and Svetlana Khorkina had things to say about it. In an interview to Sport-Express, she violated from her traditional narrative “it is a conspiracy against me” and moved on “it is God punishing the world for mistreating Russia”.

On postponing the Olympics

A: Since each of us has only one life, this is the right decision. The financial or morale losses that can result from it are not important enough to risk the health of a huge number of people. And we need to use this situation to our advantage and work well at the Court of Arbitration for Sport and with various international federations to solve all our problems by next year.

Q: So, in your opinion, cancelling [postponing] the Olympics is the best option?

A: Understanding the whole extent of the situation, and it’s unexpected for everyone, I don’t see other options. Even though some got to their peak shape this year, my words can sound harsh but it’s not a big deal. It means we’ll prepare for 2021. And, in my opinion, it all happened because they shouldn’t have offended Russia and, among others, our athletes. It says in our anthem that God is protecting our land not for nothing. Such a serious and deadly nastiness is spreading around the world, but they shouldn’t have created those political scuffles. And, I think, it’s kind of a God’s punishment. But Russia is ready to help everyone, as usual, because we understand that nothing is stronger than fighting for the good in the world together – for friendship, children, and good economics.
