Merdinyan: I felt emptiness after the Olympics

Harutyun Merdinyan of Armenia talked to News.AM Sport about his gymnastics career in 2017. Merdinyan is known for being especially strong on pommel horse, he won medals of all colors on this event at Euros including the gold in 2016. However, in Rio, after qualifying in fourth, he became seventh in the final.

He said that after the Olympic Games he felt emptiness and disappointment, but he now only looks forward, toward the Tokyo Olympics:

“After the Olympic Games, I set a goal for myself – to move forward and to win medals. It’s not a dream, it’s a goal. After the Olympics, I felt some sort of emptiness. I was very disappointed that I couldn’t win an Olympic medal. But it’s all ok now, I decided to move forward.”

“At the beginning of the year, we had a camp, then I participated at the European Championships and won the bronze medal [on pommel horse]. I’m glad that I managed to get into the top three. After the Euros, I competed at the World Championships. I am very happy with my performance. The fifth place is a decent result. Right now I’m working on adding more difficult elements, preparing for the European Championships of 2018”.

“In 2018, I want to stay healthy. My dream and goal are to compete well at Euros and Worlds and to win medals”.
