Artur Nory of Brazil had to miss the beginning of the current season because of a shoulder surgery. He talked to Globoesporte about his recovery process and the expected return to training. Translation from Portuguese for Gymnovosti was done by Clara Silva.
Artur Nory said he won’t compete until the second half of 2018 and he is aiming pretty high: “I don’t want to just participate anymore, I want to win medals.”
The bronze medalist on floor in Rio 2016 was at the Brazilian team selection camp just as a spectator. He would like to be on the floor and participate in the verification but knew that he still has to wait until he fully heals. He’s taking care of his right shoulder after going through a second surgery last November. Nory is optimistic about how the treatment is going. He believes he will be back competing before expected and says he wants to make finals during this Olympic cycle, with Tokyo in sight.
“I believe I can start training earlier than anticipated but the technical committee is not expecting it before the second half of 2018”.
Arthur Nory has been dealing with a shoulder injury since the Games in Rio. By the end of 2016, he underwent surgery to fix the tendon and start the new Olympic cycle fresh. After a five months rest, Nory went back to training just to suffer a new injury during a competition in Croatia, in October.
“This time it’s been a slow recovery. It’s a second injury at the same shoulder, the same tendon, but at a much more delicate spot. So we have to be more careful. I felt a little bit of pain, stopped immediately, and we went to find out what it was. Tokyo is two years away and there’ll be no more rest until then. It’s part of being an athlete to be in pain, to get hurt… It’s not my first injury. I’m hoping it will be the last. I am feeling much better”.
Despite the injury, Nory trained with the Brazilian team at a camp that took place in the Brazilian Training Center, located inside the Olympic Park, between February 26th and March 10th. He just did simple exercises that don’t require hand support.
“I believe I’ll be back on floor and vault first. I’ve been doing a lot of leg and abs workouts. And lots of tumbling on the trampoline, the track and even on the floor. Without using my hands, though. So only forward tumbling. Back tumbling only on the trampoline”.
