David Belyavskiy was able to come back from a wrist injury and prove that he’s still one of the best all-arounders internationally. However, the all-around final was quite nervous for both men and women, with every single medalist making mistakes. Belyavskiy overall had a decent competition without falls but stepped way out of bounds on his first pass on floor and made some mistakes on pommel horse. He was glad to be back on the medal podium but was not quite happy with the quality of his performance, despite winning the gold:
“On floor, I didn’t just have a step out of bound, I also did not do my full difficulty. On pommel horse, I also did not do everything, I was shaking on it a lot, so it’s good that I didn’t fall. I don’t know why it was like that. I came to the gym feeling fine but at first, for some reason, I couldn’t find my rhythm. But when I finished my last routine, I realized that I’d get a score that would allow me to move into first place.”
“I wasn’t able to completely prove to myself that I still got it. I wanted to do better routines but the results are what they are. The fans, of course, should be happy for me. But I’m not happy with how I did, especially on the first two events.”
The fact that the competition was held so close to Russia allowed Belyavskiy’s family and friends to watch him live. His baby daughter was able to watch him win gold medal and the video of her reaction is absolutely the cutest.
