Angelina Melnikova has struggled with consistency throughout last year and did not have a great performance at her first World Championships in Montreal. However, this year she has been extremely consistent and it looked like she could finally win an all-around medal. In the final Melnikova came to the last rotation in third place, after Simone Biles and Nina Derwael. Floor is her strong event, however, she stepped out of bounds on her first pass and ended up missing the podium by less than 0.1 which is exactly the deduction given for an out-of-bounds step. She finished in 5th place after Simone Biles, Mai Murakami, Morgan Hurd, and Nina Derwael.
Melnikova told the media that she still enjoyed the competition and hopes there will be victories in her future:
“Actually, I’m really happy that I was able to compete with such gymnasts. It was very interesting. I think everyone saw that it’s possible to fight [for the medals]. I believe that my victories are still ahead of me. I came here not at 100%, I wasn’t able to prepare many things in time.”
Melnikova said that her newfound consistency on beam is due to a different composition:
“Regarding beam, I changed my routine compared to last year and it’s now easier for me to do. And this gives me confidence. I’m most happy with my beam today, I was glad I did it almost with no mistakes”.
