Aliya Mustafina finished third on the first day of competition in Kazan but had a slightly worse day in the all-around final – she did a 1.5 Yurchenko instead of a DTY and fell and then didn’t get her acro series connected on beam (would she even be Aliya if she had a legitimate acro series on beam two days in a row?). Nevertheless, by the results of the two days combined, Mustafina finished only 0.1 behind Komova who took the third place. She also upgraded her bars routine from what she showed in the qualification and got the highest score of the day on bars. Just Mustafina things, you know.
Apparently, she did all that while keeping her expectations low, she told RIA Novosti that her performance actually was better than she thought it would be:
“I’m very happy, honestly. I accomplished a ton of small goals and even more than that. I only feel content. I liked that I was able to get myself together after the fall on vault and then went through the rest of the events without falls. It was very important. It wasn’t hard to get myself together. It was hard to tune in to this competition. But I expected to have falls at this competition”.
During the broadcast, she also talked to Emin Garibov about the reasons for her fall on vault. Mustafina said that she hasn’t been training vault for long and it was also a bit hard for her to wait a long time after the warm-up (she competed 6th on vault).
