Mustafina finishes third in qualification at Russian Championships

Aliya Mustafina doesn’t make boring comebacks where she would just try a couple of simple routines. In her first competition since Rio (after a long break and giving birth) she not only competed in the all-around but got the second highest AA score of the day! She does not yet have her full difficulty except on vault (where she got back her very clean DTY) but in the current field it was enough to place in the top three. Mustafina got the same score as Angelina Simakova – 55.432, but lost second place in a tie-breaker. Angelina Simakova got a huge 14.833 on her first floor and made the vault final in second place with 14.183 average of two vaults.

Angelina Melnikova was unstoppable today, hitting all four events and making all four event finals with the highest score on each event. She got a huge 57.732 in the all-around, apparently not at all tired from competing in Jesolo just this weekend.

Viktoria Komova had great routines in vault (she got her DTY back as well) and bars but had falls on beam and floor ending up in fourth with 54.365.

This was also a comeback for Seda Tutkhalian who’s been struggling with injuries the since early 2017 but she didn’t do well earning only 9.50 on bars and 11.00 on beam. Her only good event was vault where she finished sixth and made the event final. The day didn’t go well for Lilia Akhaimova and Maria Kharenkova either. Both are apparently injured with Akhaimova only doing bars (12.233) and Kharenkova – beam (13.333, enough for the final) and floor (12.100).

The all-around medals will be decided by the results of two days combined (qualification+final). The final will take place tomorrow at 3pm local time (8am ET) – live stream.
