Russian 2022 national team announced

The Ministry of Sports finally posted the official 2022 roster of the Russian national artistic gymnastics team.

There aren’t any surprises, but some changes are interesting. Compared to the 2021, the women’s teams look very different. The 2021 team still had Aliya Mustafina (later removed and listed as fulfilling the duty of the head coach of the junior team), Maria Paseka, and Daria Spiridonova (added later in the year) and all three are off the team. Mustafina is now officially listed as the head coach of the junior team, while Daria Spiridonova announced her retirement last year. Maria Paseka is training and hopes to make the national team again but hasn’t yet been invited back to Round Lake and hasn’t been put on the team this year.

Other notable absences on the women’s team are Anastasia Agafonova, Aleksandra Shchekoldina, and Angelina Simakova. It is not clear whether any of them are still training at the elite level. Uliana Perebinosova who hasn’t been making major international teams for a while is, however, on the main national team. Hopefully, we will see her in action this year. Maria Agafonova (no relation to Anastasia, a very common Russian last name), Alena Glotova, and Arina Semukhina who turned senior last year are both on the main team in addition to two very promising juniors (born in 2007) Diana Kustova and Leila Vasileva. Several age-eligible for Paris juniors were also added to the reserve senior team – 2007-born Amira Botasheva, Anna Esipova, and Elizaveta Us, and 2008-born Anna Kalmykova and Kristina Shapovalova. An interesting addition to the reserve senior team is Iulia Biryulya. She’s been the mainstay of the Russian Championships and Cups for many years now, regularly making vault finals and winning medals on the event, but usually that wasn’t quite enough to get a spot on the national team. Her addition probably shows that Russia is trying to fix the lack of depth on vault, especially with Paseka’s status still unknown, Melnikova taking a break and Akhaimova possibly retiring. Biryulya has a very solid DTY and has been training an Amanar in the past.

There are fewer changes on the men’s team, but it’s clear that besides the Tokyo Olympic team and Ivan Stretovich, the coaches are focusing on the next generation, while other veterans are being moved to the reserve team. This happened to Nikita Ignatyev and Vladislav Poliashov who have been on the main national team forever but fell out of grace after poor performance at Worlds this year. Also demoted to the reserve team are Kirill Prokopev, Alexey Rostov, and Dmitrii Lankin. Lankin had a really good chance to go to the Olympics as a specialist but an injury this spring took him out of the season and he’s still coming back.

Grigorii Klimentev, the only Russian MAG to medal at the 2021 Worlds, was moved to the main team, together with Mukhammadzhon Iakubov who was also on the Worlds team. A new name on the main MAG team is Ivan Zavrichko who turned senior this year – he won gold on HB and finished 4th in AA and on vault at the junior Russian Championships last year.

As usual in the beginning of the year, there are unfilled spots left on the reserve senior teams because new members will be added later based on the results of competitions throughout the year (there are 14 funded spots on each reserve team).

There was a scanning issue and one page of the document is missing – this us why there are question marks on the reserve junior team rosters.

  • Did Maria Kharenkova retire and become the beam coach of the junior team? Do you know what happened to some of ther other gymnasts from last year?
