USAG appoints the new CEO

USAG has finally appointed their new CEO and President – Li Li Leung. The last CEO, Mary Bono, lasted only a few days back in September.

Li Li Leung is a former elite and NCAA gymnast (she compete for the University of Michigan in the 90s) and has Masters in Sports Management. She has extensive experience in sports organizations, her last position being a Vice President at NBA.

Leung said to the media that she actively sought out the position because she wanted to help her sport change:

“Like everyone, I was upset and angry to learn about the abuse and the institutions that let the athletes down. I admire the courage and strength of the survivors, and I will make it a priority to see that their claims are resolved. I look forward to collaborating with the entire gymnastics community to create further change going forward, which requires that we implement important initiatives to strengthen athlete health and safety and build a clear and inclusive plan for the future. For me, this is much more than a job: it is a personal calling, for which I stand ready to answer.”

For now, it seems like Leung is actually the right person for the position and the marathon googling sessions did not reveal any social media mishaps (no boycotting Nike or anything), the only bit of personal information was the fact that she tried out for American Ninja Warrior a few years ago. She seems to be qualified, she clearly does not need this job (stepping down from the position of NBA’s VP likely comes with a salary cut, in addition to having to move to Indiana), and her experience in gymnastics is a huge bonus. Leung will start working on March, 8th.

For now, you can enjoy her floor routine and peruse some photos of her competing for Michigan.
