Valeri Liukin coached at a national team training camp in Brazil

Since his resignation from the US national team coordinator position, Valeri Liukin has kept a low profile. For a while, there were rumors of him potentially getting a job with the Russian national team, possibly fueled by the fact that an athlete from WOGA – Irina Alexeeva – was added to the Russian team roster.

However, it appears that Valeri Liukin decided to go in another direction as this past week he’s been coaching at a national team camp in Brazil. According to BRAGymnastics twitter account, Liukin held a three-day camp for the national team and it was already his second camp with the team. However, there were no official announcements to whether he will continue working with the team on a regular basis. In the photos, Liukin was wearing a Brazilian national team coach’s t-shirt.

Valeri Liukin resigned from his position as the US national team coordinator following the several prominent gymnasts like Vanessa Atler and Katelyn Ohashi accusing him of emotional and verbal abuse. In his statement, he said that the present climate surrounding the gymnastics program caused him and his family too much stress. Brazilian gymnastics is actually experiencing its own abuse scandal but so far it seems that only the MAG program has made the news. Liukin is the third high-profile US coach going abroad in the recent times: Mihai Brestian took the position of the national team coordinator in Australia last year, while Liang Chow got the same position with the Chinese national team.
